People often use the term “gum disease” to describe an array of different of gum inflammations. There are actually three stages to this disease. You need to see our dentist as soon as possible once you notice the symptoms or else the problem will only get worse.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage, which comes about when too much plaque builds up on the gum tissue. At this point, the damage is easily reversible, and Dr. Tilman Richards will be able to perform a minimally invasive treatment. At this point, the symptoms you will notice include:

  • Swollen gums
  • Tenderness in the gums
  • Receding gum line
  • Bad breath
  • Gums bleed constantly when flossing or brushing

The way to prevent gingivitis is through good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. While you should see our dentist right away, you will do a lot of good by simply practicing better oral hygiene habits.

Periodontitis

When gingivitis goes untreated, the supporting fibers and bone structures under the gum tissue begins to break apart. These structures are responsible for holding teeth in place, so at this point, the teeth will start to feel loose and may wiggle around. Surgical treatments may be required at this point. The patient may need flap surgery or soft tissue grafting.

Advanced Periodontitis

The final stage is advanced periodontitis. This occurs when the supporting fibers and bone become entirely destroyed. Teeth will begin to shift out of place or fall out completely. In addition to treating the periodontitis, many people will also require a tooth replacement to fill in the gaps in the smile.

Treat Any of These at Our Office

Patients should contact Tilman Richards, DDS in Corpus Christi, TX as soon as they notice the symptoms of gum disease. Staff is very friendly. No wait time. They saw me and my daughter in a timely manner and Dr. Richards was so great! The work I had done was completely pain free... Didn't even feel the shot or the work that was being done. The end results were exactly what I needed! No pain, no complaints. Dr. Richards even called the same evening to see if I was feeling okay and to see if I had any questions... Best dental services I have ever had.Marisa B.
