Smokers’ overall health is affected by the ingredients in cigarettes. The effects of smoking are not as often spoken about for oral health but is just as important. ┬áSmoking cigarettes is not beneficial in the slightest for your body. The tobacco epidemic has been on the rise for years, and it is as hard as ever to get rid of the habit. If oral health and cigarettes is rarely a topic of conversation, why should we be concerned with the effects of smoking for our teeth and mouth?

According to the American Dental Association, staining of the teeth and diminishing of taste is caused by tobacco products. Cigarettes are also the cause of bad breath and weakened immune systems. Along with this, you can only assume how cigarettes affect gum and periodontal diseases. Cigarettes are known to speed up the symptoms of gum and periodontal diseases, so much so your jaw bone and teeth weaken significantly. Lack of support in the mouth will cause smokers to lose their teeth at a rapid pace.

Along with gum disease and periodontal disease, risk of oral cancer is ramped up due to smoking cigarettes. The tobacco and other toxins included in cigarettes and other smokeless tobaccos cause oral cancer at higher frequency because of the amount of blood vessels and lymph nodes found in the head and neck.

Cigarettes are a main cause of tooth decay for smokers, along with a series of other oral health and overall health issues. Smokers also have a harder time with oral restoration, due to the amount of damage smoking causes.

If you are a smoker, or know a smoker you are worried about having oral health issues, call your doctor to schedule a consultation. It is very important to get your doctors health and opinion on how to restore your oral health. Your doctor will also be able to walk you through the damage that has already ensued to your teeth and gums, and can let you know what your future oral health is bound to look like.

Take your health into your own hands and learn more about the affects tobacco and cigarettes have on your teeth and oral cavity. Schedule an appointment with your doctor, as soon as possible.

Staff is very friendly. No wait time. They saw me and my daughter in a timely manner and Dr. Richards was so great! The work I had done was completely pain free... Didn't even feel the shot or the work that was being done. The end results were exactly what I needed! No pain, no complaints. Dr. Richards even called the same evening to see if I was feeling okay and to see if I had any questions... Best dental services I have ever had.Marisa B.
