Three Aspects of Winter Oral Health

to Consider

It can be easy to neglect your teeth during the holiday season, but this is a time when they are more at risk. Be sure to take the steps necessary to maintain your teeth and ensure your oral health. Additionally, it is important that you take the time to visit Dr. Tilman Richards on a regular basis. No precautions you take should ever replace regular dental care.

Practice Good Holiday Habits

When the holidays roll around, many are celebrating and not thinking about the consequences various foods and drinks have on their teeth. Numerous sugary holiday treats are often enjoyed and people may be too busy to maintain their regular brushing and flossing routine. Do not fall into these bad habits, and remember to brush and floss as usual. If you are traveling, we recommend buying a new toothbrush for your trip, or throwing it away when you return home. Bacteria thrive on wet brushes, and often while traveling we pack them in a plastic bag or in a case, which prevents them from dryer properly.

Beware of Flu Season

No one enjoys being sick during the holidays. If you do end up with a cold or the flu, here are a few things we recommend to keep your mouth well:

  • Rinse your mouth regularly. Acidic beverages, such as orange juice or lemon-lime soda, are common remedies for illnesses, but be sure not to let those acids sit on your teeth.
  • Make the time to brush, even if you do not feel up to it. It is important with the increased number of bacteria in your body to keep your mouth clean.
  • Avoid sugary cough drops or cough syrups. Try the sugar-free options if available!

Watch out for Cold Weather

The cold winter air can make your teeth especially sensitive. It is important to stay hydrated to avoid dry mouth, but see your dental professional if you experience pain.

Staff is very friendly. No wait time. They saw me and my daughter in a timely manner and Dr. Richards was so great! The work I had done was completely pain free... Didn't even feel the shot or the work that was being done. The end results were exactly what I needed! No pain, no complaints. Dr. Richards even called the same evening to see if I was feeling okay and to see if I had any questions... Best dental services I have ever had.Marisa B.
